Times have changed.
Movie cast and crew members are now protected against accident via
incorporation of various health and safety procedures. Visual effects and
graphics are used instead of dangerous and life-threatening stunts. Before visual effects were used in cinema, all the movie scenes were done by
individuals. For example, it is a well known fact that for the song jab tak hain jaan (Sholay), Hema Malini had to actually
dance bare foot and that too under scorching sun.
While some were lucky
and did not get harmed, some were not that lucky. We bring you list of 8 such
movie productions that are considered most dangerous till date:
#1 The Conqueror (1956)
The movie which was made
on the life of Genghis Khan was shot on the location in Utah. What the director
or crew was not aware was that 137 miles off the movie location was a nuclear
test site. Most members developed serious health issues caused by exposure to
the radiation.
#2 The Omen (1976)
Looks like cast and crew member of the Omen had
suffered bad luck on the sets while filming the movie. They suffered from three
lightning strikes in the middle of the flight, the hotel that producer was
staying was bombed by IRA, the plane which too is used on set was crashed and
killed everyone in it. And the spookiest of them all is the road sign of the
car crash spot of John Richardson which read ‘Omen, 66.K’
#3 The Roar (1981)
The animals of the set of the movie Roar had
gone really, really wild and started biting everyone. Some of the scenes
actually contain real biting scenes, Hedren was bitten on the neck and later
required 37 stitches in all total, Griffith was attacked and required a total
of 50 stitches on her face.
#4 Hell’s Angel
Right after 30 years of Wright Brothers
remarkable aerial invention, Howard Hughes decided to do a movie about it. He
decided to shoot some unique in air breathtaking stunts. However, safety was
not considered that led to few casualties. 3 pilots died and the mechanic of
the movie was killed. Hughes, himself, serious injuries trying to shoot an
action sequence.
#5 Twilight Zone: the movie (1983)
This movie was a turning point in the History of
Hollywood but not in a good way. Actor, Vic Morrow, and two child actors (who
were working illegally) lost their lives. This incident led to incorporation of
health and safety standards in Hollywood.
#6 The Wizard of OZ (1939)
Wizard of Oz is one of the classic children
movies so how it could be dangerous? Believe it or not, the crew members really
suffered through the shoot. Buddy Espen, who played the role of Tin Man’ had to
step down because the silver paint gave him serious respiratory problems. His
replacement, Jack Haley, got an eye infection.
#7 The Passion of the Christ (2004)
Actor, Jim Caviezel’s role required him to be
tortured, unfortunately, he was whipped twice for real during the shoot. His
shoulder got dislocated when he had to carry 150 lbs of cross. He suffered
hypothermia when the movie was being filmed in Italy and he was struck by
lighting. Ouch.
